Intrigue Medical Center
In the Spring of 2010, I worked with three other students in my synthesis design class to create a medical center in an existing building. An image of the building is shown below. It is located in Lansing, Michigan. We were given a client profile and requests for what was to be in the space.
Client Profile
Dr. Jones and Dr. VanderKlok are in search of the perfect medical facility design for their own general practice. Intrigue Family Medical will incorporate a contemporary design with an efficient and open atmosphere. The design is to include several specified spaces including six to eight exam rooms, a waiting area for twenty patients, and a private, back-of-house area for both doctors and employees. Open circulation throughout the space is very important to the function of the space. Though the space is to be open, privacy still remains important.
Space Requirements:
- Waiting Area with Seating for 20 People
- Reception Area with Sliding Glass Windows for 2 Doctors
- Digital X-Ray Room with Glass Window for Operator
- 6-8 Exam Rooms with Hand-Washing Sinks
- Nurses' Station for 2 People
- Business Manager's Office
- Billing Office with Room for 2 People
- Server Room
- Locked Drug Storage Room
- Lab with Refrigerator
- Break Room with Seating for 4 Employees
- 2 Private Offices
- 2 Unisex Bathrooms; One Public and One Private
- Furnace Room
- Maintenance Room with Mop Sink

Concept Statement
Concept: Spa and Loft
Our design for Intrigue Medical will be inspired by a spa and a loft-style apartment. From the spa images, we will take ideas of a calming, relaxing space. From the loft concept, we will take the components of contemporary design: exposed brick and a large, open feel. Our design will incorporate these elements through open planning, a calm, soothing color scheme, and contemporary clean lines. The environment created will be one where patients feel comfortable and calm but the design will also excite them. The space will flow to create efficiency for both patients and employees. Patients will be welcomed into the open waiting area which will seat up to 20 people; the area will center around a focal garden area that will provide both visual interest and a relaxed feeling. Thirteen employees will be accommodated with more private spaces, including offices and a break room. They will carry through with the clean lines and calming colors but will be places of retreat away from patients.

Design Solutions
With the Intrigue Medical Center, we were able to fit all of the requirements in the space. We created a central nurses' station so that the nurses would have access and line of sight to all of the patient rooms. With the patient rooms, we incorporated sliding doors made from eco-resin to maintain privacy with the least amount of interruption to the space. We tucked the office spaces away so that they had some level of privacy, while also maintaining a close relationship to the patient rooms for ease of use.
