Horizon Yoga Studio
In Spring of 2011, I worked on the ASID student design competition project. In only one week, I designed a yoga studio to precise specifications and guidelines. I was given the exterior dimensions of the building, which was located at the end of a row of tenant spaces, as well as the dimensions for the location of the interior support columns. The project needed to include a reception area, a retail space, a storage space for employees, three yoga studios accommodating a various number of people and locker rooms. The locker rooms required a certain number of lockers, showers, toilets and sinks and needed to be ADA accessible.

Concept Statement
Concept: Sunset
Inspired by the tranquil feel of a sunset at the end of a long day, Horizon Yoga Studios integrates the horizontal lines of the horizon with the beautiful canvas of oranges and yellows seen as a day comes to a close. The space will utilize harmony and unity throughout the design, creating a cohesive feel that flows from room to room and staying true to the nature of the practice of yoga. A sunset represents the ultimate contrast in light and dark, a beginning and an end. Horizon Yoga Studios will emphasize this contrast with the materials used, all of which are sustainable. Through the application of zero VOC paint on the walls and dark bamboo flooring, Horizon will create a unified design that is harmonious with the environment.

Design Solutions
Due to the required occupancy in the studios, not much of the floor plan was left for the retail, reception, storage and locker room spaces. The locker rooms were created to fit the requirements of ADA accessibility and the reception and retail were combined so that users could relax, check in and shop all in one convenient place. All of the design requirements were met and a 5' corridor was incorporated for wheelchair accessibility and for access to the emergency exit.
